tell it like it is: aquarius

I thought, beginning now, that I would put out short interviews every astrological season with some words from people born under that sign. Starting with Aquarius wasn’t hard because two friends, and creatives I admire, immediately came to mind: Ketty and Cassandra. I think it’s cool to have a variety of folks who are the same sun sign to give their perspective to the very same questions, because you will notice how different their answers are while still sharing a similar essence. From an astrology perspective, this is because there is so much more to their charts than simply the sun sign (we will keep those private!). The other, and possibly more important difference, is their life experiences and how those have shaped them.

I think of astrology as a blueprint and environment/culture/society as forces that shape a person. Who we are at the intersections of race, gender, class, mental and physical abilities, to name a few of the human hierarchies we have created. And of course, the healing therapies and access to them, support in them, the resilience building and the time one is alive in history, all shift how we feel these forces. Being in a body can be so simple and yet so layered and complicated once we add in other humans, our environment and the society we are immersed in. They impact all of us- you do not escape them, even if you are not conscious of them. And yet this work, the work of going deep into our tissue, into our soma, is the working of undoing and choice. And with this choice, we move out into the world and shape it, too.

All that you touch
You Change.
All that you Change
Changes you.

The only lasting truth
Is Change.

God
Is Change.
Why is the universe?           To shape God.           Why is God?           To shape the universe.
— Octavia Butler, Parable of the Sower

I asked Ketty and Cassandra to answer some “rapid fire” questions about what it means to be an Aquarius. I got this idea from Brene Brown’s podcast, who I believe got the idea from Oprah! They answered in their unique ways and I was truly joyful listening to both of them. Quirky and soft, hilarious and touching, I hope you enjoy their interviews as much as I did putting this together.

A little bit about our guests...

Ketty Joe is a brilliant thinker, listener and feeler that I met at a yoga retreat at Om Waters in Northern Thailand. She works with young folks in New York City, empowering them with skills to navigate their worlds. She is also the creatrix of Vulnerable City, a podcast that is all about telling the truth and having conversations around the difficult topics that shape who we are. She reminds listeners that freedom lies in our ability to be open and honest. Check her out on Instagram @vulnerablecity and wherever you get your podcasts!

Cassandra is a beloved friend and fellow outside-the-box thinker. We were once-upon-a-time roommates for a brief period that we coined “summer camp”, because that’s exactly how it felt. She is a skilled herbalist and the founder of Better Boundaries, where she offers strategic business consulting and virtual assistance with an entrepreneurial marketing focus. Her latest products use plant magick to help sustain and protect your boundaries. You can also find her on Instagram @betterboundaries .
